As of today, the bambino is about 8 weeks away, and the child-to-be’s room is mostly complete, with only a few finishing touches left to do.
The room had, in a previous life, served as our walk-in pantry. But through some creative rearranging, we freed the space up to become the baby’s room. It’s only 5’ wide by 6’ deep, but babies are small, so a small room seems perfectly appropriate.
That, and the goofy floor plan of our apartment meant giving up either the pantry or the office/den/guestroom, and that just seemed silly.
But with only 30 square feet, space is at a premium, even for a wee person. With the crib and dresser in place, we’re left with only about 3’ by 3’ to stand in. Therefore we’ve been working to utilize every inch as best as possible.
If you’ve ever toured a submarine, it’s a lot like that. |

Cycling Season Resumes & My Million-Peso Idea |

I got hooked on bicycle commuting last summer. My office is a scant 3.5 miles from the house, and Chicago has an excellent network of bike-friendly streets. Unfortunately, weather and the holidays conspired to make biking in December a bit tough, so I rode the bus. If bicycle commuting has taught me one thing, it’s that riding the bus sucks. The stopping and starting, the rude high school students, the oblivious, self-absorbed iPod listeners, the standing around at the bus stop—biking eliminates all of that. Unfortunately, a combination of consecutive days of precipitation, slippery streets, freaky-low temperatures, holiday travels, and ample rust meant my bike stayed locked up on the sidewalk since Thanksgiving. Of course this period of neglect led to more rust, and a nearly ruined chain. But it’s a new year, and its time to start riding again, dadgummit! |

The Germans get a bad rap. The stereotypes say they're stern, stoic, ruthlessly efficient, and utterly, utterly humorless. I'm not so sure about the humorless thing though. After all, it was the Germans who gave the world the Christmas Pickle. Gott im Himmel, was ist eine Weihnachtsessiggurke? (God in heaven, what is a Chirstmas Pickle?) |

Giardiniera Mayonnaise--Epilogue |

Yes, yes y'all, I used the word "epilogue." After saving up enough leftover oil from jars of giardiniera, I finally tried again to make my magic giardiniera mayo, and this time it worked. It was uber-spicy, but quite yummy. It's finally gone having been thrown into an ad hoc spicy cole slaw I made, but wow was it worth the work. |

- We're home right on schedule
- the cats are still alive
- the house didn't burn down or get broken into
- the laundry has been started
We altered the trip directions slightly, but we had a fantastic time.
I desparately need a shower and to wash some more of the clothing that I packed since EVERYTHING smells like a campfire. |
